Amazon is developing a new AI-powered smartphone in partnership with Seamus Blackley, cofounder of Xbox, according to reporting on the project’s early stages. Unlike the company’s failed Fire Phone, the device would prioritize artificial intelligence features over third-party apps, potentially integrating seamlessly with Amazon Prime Video, Prime Music, and shopping capabilities rather than relying on traditional app ecosystems.
Amazon has begun developing a second smartphone that would leverage AI agents to simplify tasks like ordering food from Grubhub or calling rides through voice prompts, according to reports on the project. The company is exploring multiple form factors, including traditional touchscreen devices and dumbphone designs, with design inspiration drawn from successful Amazon products like Kindle e-readers and Eero networking equipment.
Amazon‘s first smartphone, the Fire Phone, failed due to expensive hardware manufacturing costs, limited third-party app availability, and exclusive distribution through AT&T. The new approach abandons the Fire Phone‘s signature 3D eye-tracking technology—which used corner-mounted cameras to monitor user eye movements—in favor of AI-driven functionality. Samsung introduced similar AI capabilities in February, offering an “Automated app action” feature that executes prompts without requiring users to manually navigate apps.
The project remains in early development stages. Reuters sources cautioned that the phone could be canceled if the strategy shifts or due to financial concerns.
Amazon has not publicly announced the initiative, and specific hardware specifications, pricing, or launch timelines remain undisclosed. The company has not confirmed whether the device will launch or what final form factor it will take.
Amazon continues evaluating hardware designs and AI integration strategies. The company is reportedly assessing whether the phone could function as a central hub connecting its ecosystem of devices, though development could be halted if business priorities shift.
