Apple iOS 26.3 Adds New Location Privacy Feature With BT

Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce a new privacy-focused feature in its upcoming iOS 26.3 software update called “Limit Precise Location.” The new setting, developed in collaboration with carriers like BT in the UK, aims to reduce the amount of precise location information shared with cellular networks, giving users more control over their data.

According to reports on the upcoming software release, the new feature will be available in the iPhone’s settings. When activated, it will restrict the granularity of location data that a cellular network can access. Instead of being able to pinpoint a user’s exact street address, the network may only be able to determine a less precise area, such as the general neighborhood.

The feature is designed to enhance user privacy without affecting core functionality. An explanation of the setting states, With this setting turned on, some information made available to cellular networks is limited. As a result, they might be able to determine only a less precise location. The documentation also clarifies that the setting does not impact the device’s signal quality or overall user experience.

The “Limit Precise Location” setting specifically targets location data available to the cellular network for functions like call routing and network management. It is distinct from the Location Services settings that users manage for individual applications. This means that features like Apple’s Find My service, which allows sharing your location with friends and family, will continue to function with full precision as controlled by the user.

Crucially, the feature will not interfere with emergency communications. The precision of location data shared with emergency responders during an emergency call remains unaffected, ensuring user safety is not compromised. Initial reports suggest compatibility will be limited to newer hardware, such as the unannounced iPhone 16e and iPad Pro (M5) Wi-Fi + Cellular models, and will require support from the mobile carrier, with BT’s EE network cited as an early partner.

The introduction of this feature aligns with Apple’s long-standing public commitment to user privacy. By providing more granular controls over data shared with third parties, including network operators, Apple continues to build out its suite of privacy tools. Mobile operators traditionally use location data for network optimization, analytics, and ensuring a stable connection, but giving users the option to limit this access is a significant step toward greater data minimization.

At this time, a specific release date for iOS 26.3 has not been announced. It is also unclear which mobile carriers beyond the BT group will support the feature at launch, both in the UK and internationally. A complete list of compatible iPhone and iPad models has not yet been published, with initial reports only mentioning future, unreleased devices.

Once iOS 26.3 is released, the feature will likely be rolled out to users with compatible devices and carriers through a standard software update. The adoption rate will depend on user awareness and the perceived privacy benefits. The move could also encourage other mobile operators globally to adopt the necessary network configurations to support this privacy-enhancing feature for their customers.

Users interested in this feature should monitor official Apple announcements for the release of iOS 26.3. Once the update is available, they can check for compatibility with their device and carrier. To use the feature, users will likely need to navigate to the Cellular settings on their iPhone or iPad to find and enable the “Limit Precise Location” toggle.
