Doom: The Dark Ages Update 3 Unleashes Ripatorium 2.0

id Software continues its relentless pursuit of demon-slaying perfection with Title Update 3 for Doom: The Dark Ages. The centrepiece of this update is Ripatorium 2.0, a customizable combat sandbox designed to redefine player-driven carnage.

Forget pre-packaged arenas. Ripatorium 2.0 gives players the keys to their own personal circle of Hell, allowing them to craft encounters so brutal and intricate that they would make even the Dark Lord sweat.

This update is not just a simple upgrade; it’s a full-blown demonic design studio. The revamped Ripatorium now operates on a round-based system, allowing players to meticulously configure up to five rounds of escalating chaos.

Each round boasts unique settings and a staggering ten respawn waves, offering unprecedented control over enemy composition, density, and aggression. Think of it as Doom‘s answer to Minecraft, but instead of building blocks, players are wielding shotguns and summoning hordes of the damned.

Sharing the Mayhem: Passcode System

The true stroke of genius lies in the new Passcode sharing system. Feeling particularly sadistic? Players can conjure up their ultimate gauntlet and share the experience with the world. Each round generates a unique Passcode, allowing players to instantly replicate a meticulously crafted nightmare.

id Software is even planning on curating the community’s best encounters, integrating them directly into the game via Active Tunable updates. This means that a personalized torture chamber could become the next benchmark for Doom veterans.

To play someone else’s Ripatorium encounter, select the corresponding round and press the newly added “Enter New Passcode” input at the bottom of the screen.

New Presets and Jukebox Additions

For those seeking instant gratification, Ripatorium 2.0 also introduces new Encounter Presets: Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic. These pre-configured scenarios offer a quick dose of mayhem for players of all skill levels.

And to soundtrack a symphony of destruction, five new tracks have been added to the Jukebox, including the aptly named “Bloodspill” and “Divine Retribution.”

Beyond the Ripatorium overhaul, Title Update 3 delivers a host of combat tweaks and bug fixes designed to refine the core Doom experience.

The “Brink of Death” feature is now adjustable, allowing players to fine-tune the game’s difficulty and challenge their survival skills. Input bindings have been expanded, enabling players to swap active Shield Runes and Melee Weapons on the fly.

Enemy AI and Combat Tweaks

Several enemy AI issues have been addressed, including a fix for the Cacodemon’s shield persisting after it visually expired. The update also ensures that gore appears more frequently and consistently across various weapons and enemies, amplifying the visceral impact of combat.

Enemy ragdoll reactions have been improved for melee attacks and Shield Charge, making each encounter feel heavier and more satisfying. The player no longer clips through the geometry of the wall when performing a Glory Strike against the Komodo.

No update is complete without bug fixes, and Title Update 3 delivers. One notable fix addresses an issue where the first instance of damage taken after a checkpoint wouldn’t mitigate damage properly if hit from behind.

Another resolves a rare issue where the campaign’s Pause and Dossier menus were replaced with Ripatorium menus, leading to save corruption. Stopping the Combat Shotgun’s burst fire with a Shield block no longer makes the camera tilt slightly until you mantle or restart the map.

These fixes, combined with the gameplay enhancements, solidify Doom: The Dark Ages as a constantly evolving and increasingly polished experience.

Ripatorium 2.0 is more than just a new mode; it’s a testament to id Software’s commitment to player agency and community engagement. By empowering players to create and share their own demonic playgrounds, they’re fostering a culture of creativity and competition that will undoubtedly extend the life of Doom: The Dark Ages for years to come.
