Equinix Launches Liquid-Cooled MB3 Facility in Mumbai
Equinix announced the opening of MB3 on Wednesday, describing it as a liquid-cooled International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre designed to support next-generation digital services. The facility spans close to four acres and provides more than 1,370 cabinets at launch, with capacity to scale to over 5,475 cabinets when fully built out.
The new centre sits on the same Mumbai campus as Equinix’s existing MB1, MB2, and MB4 facilities. All three are interconnected via dedicated dark fiber, along with Equinix’s CN1 data centre in Chennai, which launched in September 2024.
Quick Facts
- Facility: MB3 Data Centre, Mumbai

Strategic Timing for India’s AI and Cloud Expansion
The launch aligns with accelerating digital transformation across India. According to Equinix India MD Manoj Paul, the country’s digital economy is on track to reach US$1 trillion by 2027-2028, driven by rapid expansion of digital services and digital public infrastructure platforms including Aadhaar, UPI, and ONDC.
MB3’s design specifically targets AI and machine learning workloads alongside data-intensive applications. The facility’s energy-efficient architecture and high-density configuration support enterprises preparing for large-scale AI inferencing operations.
Multi-Cloud Connectivity and Ecosystem Access
Equinix emphasizes MB3’s role as a connectivity hub for India’s cloud ecosystem. The facility provides native on-ramps to major cloud service providers including AWS, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and Salesforce.
Enterprise customers gain access to Equinix Fabric, an interconnection service enabling dynamic connections to multiple clouds, partners, and providers on demand. This capability becomes critical as organizations adopt hybrid multicloud architectures requiring seamless data exchange across infrastructure boundaries.
Broader India Investment and Regional Capacity
MB3 extends Equinix’s cumulative India investment to over US$365 million. The Mumbai and Chennai campuses combined now provide more than 4,725 cabinets of capacity, positioning Equinix as a major infrastructure player supporting India’s digital economy growth.
Paul stated that as enterprises embrace hybrid multicloud and prepare for AI inferencing at scale, seamless interconnection between businesses, network service providers and hyperscalers becomes essential.
He framed MB3’s launch as arriving at a pivotal moment for India’s infrastructure maturation.
