The update, rolling out next week, aims to eliminate the dreaded “charger surprise” by forecasting how many charging points will likely be open when you arrive. This is welcome news, considering the app previously only displayed charger locations, leaving drivers to gamble on real-time availability.
The magic behind the prediction lies in a blend of artificial intelligence and real-time data. Google is harnessing its AI wizardry to analyze usage patterns and combine them with live charger status updates. The goal? To provide a reliable estimate of charger availability, helping drivers “avoid lines and save time.”
Unfortunately, the initial rollout of the charger availability tracker is limited to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Hopefully, a wider release to standard mobile Google Maps is not far behind.
Beyond EV charging, the update also brings a refreshed Explore tab to the forefront. Swiping up within Maps now reveals “trending and popular restaurants, activities and sights near you.” The revamp makes it easier to discover curated lists and recommendations from local influencers and platforms like OpenTable.
The updated Explore tab is scheduled to roll out globally on both Android and iOS this month.
Not content with simply showing you where to go, Google is further integrating its Gemini AI chatbot into Maps. In the spirit of 2025, where AI is seemingly integrated into everything, Gemini will provide “know before you go” tips for restaurants, hotels, concert venues, and other points of interest. According to Google, Gemini will act as a “knowledgeable guide,” offering insights and recommendations before you even arrive.
This AI-powered tips feature is already available to many users in the US on both Android and iOS.
In a nod to user privacy (or perhaps just a bit of fun), Google is also allowing reviewers to change their display names when providing feedback to local businesses. Now you can leave that scathing review as “Secret Squirrel” or gush about the pastries as “Sugar Addict.” While your Google account remains the source, the anonymity might encourage more candid (and hopefully still polite) feedback.
This update joins a growing list of enhancements to Google Maps, including live lane guidance for Polestar 4 owners and its recent expansion to Garmin smartwatches.
As EVs become increasingly mainstream, the ability to accurately predict charger availability becomes not just a convenience, but a necessity. Google’s embrace of AI in Maps signals a commitment to making navigation smarter, more efficient, and less stressful for drivers of all types.
