Google Maps Adds EV Charging Routes to 350+ Android Auto Models

Google Maps is rolling out enhanced electric vehicle trip planning to Android Auto today, enabling drivers to optimize routes based on real-time battery predictions and charging needs. The expansion covers over 350 new car models from 16 major manufacturers across the United States.

Users can enable the feature by entering their vehicle’s make, model, year, and trim in the Google Maps app. On Android devices, navigate to Settings > Your vehicles > Electric to complete setup.

Once configured, adding a destination displays the trip’s expected battery usage and estimated arrival battery level. Drivers can input their current charge level to receive recommended charging stops along the route, with an updated ETA accounting for charging time.

  • Battery predictions powered by Google AI and advanced energy models analyzing vehicle weight and battery capacity
  • Real-time integration with traffic conditions, road elevation, and weather data
  • Customizable arrival battery level preferences to optimize charging stop placement
  • Seamless Android Auto integration for in-vehicle navigation

Today’s launch adds support for electric and plug-in hybrid models from Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, FIAT, Genesis, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Lexus, Lucid, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Google states that support for additional manufacturers is coming soon, though specific timelines remain unclear.

EV adoption continues accelerating as charging infrastructure expands. According to 9to5Google, this update represents a significant step toward simplifying long-distance electric vehicle travel by reducing range anxiety through intelligent route optimization.

The feature builds on Google’s broader Android Auto improvements, which have introduced immersive navigation updates in recent years. By embedding battery predictions directly into navigation, Google removes friction from EV trip planning that previously required third-party apps or manual calculations.

Google has not disclosed specific accuracy metrics for battery predictions or provided details on how the system handles regional variations in charging network availability. The timeline for expanding support beyond the 16 brands listed today remains unspecified.
