How to Speed Up Your Android After a System Update

If your Android device feels sluggish after a system update, clearing the system cache partition can help. This process removes temporary files left over from the previous software version without affecting your photos, contacts, messages, or other personal data.

What the System Cache Partition Does

During a major software update, Android downloads and unpacks temporary files into a dedicated storage area called the system cache partition. According to Android maintenance guides, these leftover files can sometimes conflict with the new system, causing performance issues, lag, or app instability. Wiping the cache partition forces the system to rebuild these files fresh, ensuring a cleaner installation.

Important: This is different from clearing individual app caches. The system cache partition is a separate storage area reserved specifically for system-level temporary files.

Step 1: Boot Into Recovery Mode

First, completely power off your device. Once it’s off, use the specific button combination for your model to enter Android Recovery Mode:

Samsung Galaxy Devices:

  1. Press and hold Volume Up + Power buttons simultaneously
  2. Some newer Samsung models may require connecting a USB-C cable to a computer first
  3. Release when the Samsung logo appears

Google Pixel Devices:

  1. Press and hold Power + Volume Down buttons together
  2. Release when the bootloader screen appears
  3. Use volume buttons to select Recovery Mode, then press Power to confirm

Motorola Devices:

  1. Press and hold Power + Volume Down together
  2. Use volume buttons to select Recovery Mode from the fastboot menu
  3. Press Power to confirm

Once in Recovery Mode, you’ll see the Android Recovery menu. Your touchscreen will not work here — use the Volume buttons to navigate and the Power button to select.

Step 2: Wipe the Cache Partition

  1. Use Volume Down to highlight Wipe cache partition
  2. Press Power to select it
  3. Use Volume Down to highlight Yes when prompted to confirm
  4. Press Power to confirm
  5. Wait for the process to complete (usually takes 10-30 seconds)
  6. Once finished, Reboot system now will be highlighted
  7. Press Power to restart your device

What to Expect After Clearing Cache

Your device may boot slower than usual the first time — this is completely normal. Android is rebuilding its cache from scratch, which takes a few minutes. Once the rebuild completes, you should notice smoother performance and better app stability.

Battery behavior might vary for a charge cycle or two as the system recalibrates. Apps like Google Play Services may need to reopen to rebuild their caches. All of this is expected behavior.

Before You Start

  • Charge your device to at least 50% battery to prevent shutdown during the process
  • Have your screen lock PIN or pattern ready—you’ll need it after reboot
  • While this process doesn’t delete personal data, backing up important files is always good practice

If Performance Issues Persist

If clearing the cache partition doesn’t resolve the problem, try these additional steps:

  • Clear individual app caches through SettingsApps
  • Boot into Safe Mode to check if third-party apps are causing issues
  • Free up storage space if your device is nearly full
  • As a last resort, consider a factory reset after backing up all data
