Tencent Cloud boosts telcos with AI & super apps in emerging markets

Tencent Cloud is intensifying its focus on emerging market telecommunications. The company is positioning its artificial intelligence (AI) and super app platforms as crucial tools. These offerings aim to help operators drive growth and unlock new revenue streams across Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

According to Fred Sun, General Manager for Europe at Tencent Cloud, operators in these regions are focused on expanding user engagement as mobile adoption accelerates. Therefore, Tencent Cloud is promoting its “Super App as a Service” (TCSAS) platform. This platform enables operators to integrate multiple services into a single application.

  • The TCSAS model has already been deployed with operators including Orange, e&, and Telkomsel, particularly where app usage is relatively low. Orange Middle East & Africa, for instance, adopted TCSAS to build its “Max it” super app.
  • Tencent Cloud is also advancing AI-led use cases. These include digital onboarding, electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC), and identity verification tools.
  • Furthermore, the company offers fraud detection tools, leveraging its experience in China’s fintech sector.
  • It provides platforms for operators to build AI agents without requiring extensive in-house expertise.
  • Tencent Cloud’s sovereign cloud offering allows operators to host cloud infrastructure within their own data centers. This enables them to sell services to enterprise customers.
  • Operators in emerging markets often have hundreds of millions of subscribers. However, only a fraction actively use their digital platforms.
  • Orange’s “Max it” super app aims to reach approximately 45 million active users by 2025.
  • Tencent Cloud’s AI Face Shield solution, used for eKYC, has processed over 20 billion transactions and blocked 10 million attacks globally.

Many telecom operators globally are transforming into “techcos,” seeking innovation and digital transformation beyond traditional connectivity. This shift involves leveraging new systems and processes to improve customer experience and deliver profitable services. The integration of AI technology and the deployment of 5G networks are significant drivers in reshaping telecom business models. Companies like Tencent Cloud aim to capitalize on this trend, particularly in emerging markets where rapid population growth and increasing digitalization present significant opportunities.

Tencent Cloud emphasizes its role as a partner, not a competitor, to telcos. The goal remains to support operators in growth, efficiency improvements, and enhanced user engagement in competitive digital landscapes.
