Windows 11 October Update Fixes Red Screen Bug and Rendering Issues

Windows 11 bug tinted games and videos red…

Microsoft acknowledges several issues affecting Windows 11, including videos and games appearing red, and screen rendering problems. The fixes are now available in the October 2025 optional update (KB5067036).

Red Screen Bug Fixed

Microsoft says it’s aware of an issue where some videos or games would appear red after installing recent updates, particularly the August optional (KB5064081) or later. However, a fix has been found and is included in Windows 11’s October 2025 optional update (KB5067036). It’ll also be included in the November Patch Tuesday.

“After you install KB5064081, some videos and games might be unexpectedly red,” Microsoft noted in the release notes, adding that the issue is fixed.

While not a widespread issue, the bug affected how Windows 11 renders colors, especially when attempting to adjust colors and increase brightness in HDR. Graphics would display with a red tint under certain conditions.

Screen Rendering Bug with Full-Screen Apps

The second issue is more significant. When a full-screen game was running in the background, apps or browsers on screen did not update correctly.

For example, when scrolling in Edge or Chrome, only parts of the page refreshed. Moving the cursor would eventually trigger the rest of the screen to update. This affected many users who run games in the background while browsing or working.

Microsoft confirmed the bug causes only some parts of the screen to update when a full-screen app or game is running in the background:

“Apps and browsers might display partially unresponsive onscreen content when other maximized or full-screen apps are updating in the background. This issue is especially noticeable when scrolling, as only parts of the window content might update.”

The company also fixed an issue where text does not render correctly when editing content in apps like Word or online text editors.

Gradual Rollout of Fixes

These fixes are being gradually rolled out. Installing Windows 11 KB5067036 or a newer update may not immediately resolve the issues for all users. However, wider rollout is expected to start on November 11, when Patch Tuesday updates are released.

This means some users might still experience these problems even after installing the October update, depending on whether they’re included in the initial deployment phase.

Warning: October Update Breaks Task Manager

While Windows 11 KB5067036 patches these critical issues, it also introduces a new problem with Task Manager.

Microsoft confirmed an issue where Task Manager continues to run in the background when you close it. The company accidentally broke the ‘X’ close button, and if you use it to exit Task Manager, it’ll stay running in the background, which could lead to poor performance.

Having multiple instances of Task Manager running simultaneously can cause:

  • Performance degradation – System resources consumed by hidden processes
  • Memory usage issues – Multiple Task Manager instances taking up RAM
  • Unexpected behavior – Conflicts between running instances

A future update, likely the November 11 Patch Tuesday, will include a patch for Task Manager, among other issues.

What Should You Do?

If you’re experiencing the red screen bug or rendering issues with full-screen apps, installing the October optional update (KB5067036) should resolve these problems. However, be aware of the Task Manager issue that comes with this update.

For users who aren’t experiencing these specific problems, waiting for the November Patch Tuesday update might be a safer approach, as it will include both the fixes and the Task Manager patch.

To minimize Task Manager issues in the meantime, use Alt+F4 or the File menu to close Task Manager instead of clicking the X button. This should properly terminate the application rather than leaving it running in the background.
