The Final Roadmap
Riot Games announced it will end active development for 2XKO this December, meaning the free-to-play fighter will no longer receive new content updates after that point. Before that happens, two more champions are joining the roster.
- Lux and Samira will both join 2XKO before the end of 2026
- A final bug fix patch is scheduled for December
- This patch will be the last official update from the development team
Servers Stay Up, Refunds Roll Out
Despite the end of active development, 2XKO servers will remain online and players can continue accessing the game for free. Offline play stays unaffected too, according to Riot Games, and the company says it will give advance notice if server status ever changes.
Riot is also taking steps to make things right for existing players:
- All champions will be unlocked for everyone
- Most cosmetic items are being bundled for easier access
- Riot will refund all money spent on 2XKO on or before August 20
- Players keep any content they already own
- Avatar and player profile items can still be unlocked using Credits
Another Live Service Bet Falls Short
Riot’s decision points to a broader problem in the free-to-play space. Sustaining a live-service title long term takes continuous investment and constant player engagement, and not every new IP clears that bar no matter how much anticipation surrounds launch. Stepping back from 2XKO frees up resources Riot can put toward other projects.
The timing lands amid a busy stretch of gaming industry news. Recent stories include leaked pricing for Xbox’s 25th Anniversary console, the upcoming launch of Zero Hour, and the casting of Dave Bautista as Kratos in the live action God of War series. Compulsion Games also became independent again this week, adding to a stretch of news that raises real questions about how studios are betting on new intellectual property right now.
