Meta Apologizes for AI Tool Suspending Instagram Account
Meta Platforms Inc. has apologized after its automated security system mistakenly suspended the Instagram account of the No Kings Coalition, an anti-Trump activist group, in the middle of nationwide protests and its early-voting push.

The group said its page disappeared for roughly 90 minutes. Even after it reappeared publicly, organizers stayed locked out for some time, according to a statement the coalition issued Saturday. The timing was bad: the Nov. 3 midterm elections are days away, and voter outreach is the group’s main job right now.

A Claude-Powered Tool Looked Like a Bot

Instagram’s engineering team traced the suspension to the account’s “reading” activity. An AI tool built on Anthropic PBC’s Claude was pulling up profiles, posts, and hashtags at an unusually high rate, about four times the normal level on Saturday.

Andy Stone, Meta’s Vice President of Communications, explained the reasoning in a post on Sunday. These abrupt, high-volume, sequential requests in a short period resembled automated bot traffic rather than an ordinary human browsing our systems, he wrote.

Meta did not say whether it plans to change its security protocols in response. The coalition’s account has been restored, though the group’s access problems reportedly lingered after it came back.

Hashlytics Take

The system did exactly what it was built to do, and that is the problem. Face scrutiny is the wrong frame for a single bad call; the real issue is that AI-driven moderation still sorts traffic into two bins, human or bot, and a person delegating their browsing to an assistant fits neither. As more people hand reading tasks to AI tools, bursty, sequential requests will stop being a reliable sign of abuse. Until platform security algorithms account for that, expect more false positives, and expect the ones that land on political organizers in election season to be the ones that get noticed. A fast apology helps, but a working appeal path is what users actually need when the lockout hits.
