Who Gets the Credit, and Why Amounts Differ
The NCC has set two conditions. To qualify, a subscriber must:
- Be located in an LGA the NCC has identified as failing quality-of-service standards.
- Have made at least one billed outgoing activity (a call, SMS, or data session) during the period of network disruption.
The process is automatic. Eligible customers do not need to apply or take any action to receive the credit.
The amount is not uniform. The NCC calculates compensation from the subscriber’s billed usage during the affected period, and it also weighs the operator’s quality-of-service performance in that specific LGA. Two customers in the same area can therefore receive different amounts. MTN confirmed the payments cover network quality issues between February and April, though reports did not clarify the year. The compensation covers failures across voice, data, and SMS services.
Seventeen States Are on the NCC’s List
The NCC has published a full list of LGAs where mobile network operators missed quality standards, available on its official website. The affected states are Bayelsa, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Osun, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe. Being in one of those states is not enough on its own, so subscribers should check the NCC list to confirm their specific LGA is included.
MTN sends an SMS notification once the credit is applied. The airtime can be used for calls, SMS, data, and USSD transactions. Customers should stay alert to phishing attempts around the payout. Verify official communications, and never share personal information or private keys in response to unsolicited messages about these credits.
Hashlytics Take
The spread from N20 to N1,436 is the formula working as designed, but it shows what this payout really is: a rebate scaled to what you spent, not payment for the time you lost. A subscriber who barely used the network may get pocket change for the same bad service as a heavy user who gets four figures. Until MTN or the NCC pins down which February to April window applies, customers also have no easy way to check the credit against their own usage.
