The Charges Against Wei
On July 6, the 50-year-old received nine additional charges comprising three counts of money laundering and six counts of fraud. These new charges bring his total to 11. According to police, Wei allegedly used more than $38 million from purported ill-gotten gains to buy a good-class bungalow on Chee Hoon Avenue, valued at around $55 million.
In addition, Wei is said to have acquired over $5 million in two bank accounts that year, with approximately $3.2 million alleged to be from criminal conduct.
The Server Fraud Scheme
The fraud charges assert that Wei conspired with two others to defraud server suppliers. His alleged co-conspirators are:
- Aaron Woon Guo Jie, 41
- Jenny Lim, 51
The alleged conspiracy involved fraud linked to purchasing servers from three major suppliers: Dell, Super Micro Computer, and Asus. According to police, the trio falsely represented to these suppliers that one of the Aperia Group companies would be the end-user of the servers. These fraudulent transactions occurred multiple times in 2023 and 2024.
Corporate Charges
In connection with the alleged scheme, the companies involved face the following charges:
| Company | Charges |
|---|---|
| Aperia International | 5 counts of fraud |
| Aperia Cloud Services (II) | 2 counts of fraud |
| A-Speed Infotech | 1 count of fraud |
Connection to DeepSeek and US Nvidia Restrictions
This case is reportedly linked to a US investigation into whether Chinese start-up DeepSeek circumvented American restrictions on advanced GPUs from Nvidia. DeepSeek allegedly acquired these chips through third parties in various countries, including Singapore.
Wei, along with Woon and another individual named Li Ming (52), were initially brought to court in February 2025 in connection with this investigation. In January 2025, DeepSeek launched a free artificial intelligence assistant that quickly became a top downloaded app. The launch sparked concerns about the US lead in AI and triggered market volatility, wiping around $1 trillion off US technology stocks.
Defense and Next Steps
Wei is represented by lawyers from WongPartnership. His legal team issued a statement on July 6 indicating that their client and the involved companies would contest all charges against them. They noted that the companies and Wei are cooperating with authorities and described the charges as relating to commercial transactions involving multi-jurisdictional regulatory compliance.
Pre-trial conferences for Alan Wei Zhaolun and the three companies are scheduled for August 14. Jenny Lim’s case remains pending.
