OpenAI says it will integrate Pierre’s technology directly into Codex, building on the Git workflows developers already use. Pierre’s tools will remain open-source, and OpenAI plans to keep contributing to them. The announcement arrives barely weeks after Anthropic launched Scion, its own take on the same problem.
Four Pierre Tools, Some Already Inside Codex
Pierre’s tools are already partly integrated into Codex. They cover code review, file browsing, and history tracking, which are the parts of the workflow that get heavier as codebases grow and agents write more of the code.
- Trees: a library for browsing project files inside Codex, so developers can find the code they need quickly.
- Diffs: shows code changes and stays fast on large changes. It also has an Edit mode for correcting lines directly.
- Highlights: live syntax highlighting that refreshes as a developer types or as an agent streams code.
- Code Storage: an API that lets applications store code and track its history with Git. Existing customers can keep using the service after the deal closes.
OpenAI describes the deal as a way to connect the code a business ships with the decisions its people make. The company’s argument is that Git systems have to adapt as more development work happens in parallel, and it says its plans with the Pierre team span the whole workflow, from an agent creating a branch through to final deployment.
Hashlytics Take
The interesting part is the fork in strategy. Anthropic’s Scion, as we covered it, goes after Git itself. OpenAI is doing the opposite: keeping Git underneath and buying the layer people actually touch, which is browsing files, reading diffs, and checking what an agent just wrote. That is a bet that humans will keep reviewing agent output through familiar Git tooling, so the contested ground is the review surface, not the version control engine. Keeping Pierre’s tools open-source limits how much lock-in OpenAI can create, which means any edge will have to come from how well they work inside Codex. OpenAI has not said when the remaining pieces ship, so for now this is a direction, not a product.
