OpenAI has announced the preview rollout of its Codex coding agent within the ChatGPT mobile app, making it available on both iOS and Android. This strategic move allows developers to manage and monitor their AI-powered coding tasks directly from their smartphones, transforming the phone into a control surface rather than a local development environment.
Mobile Control Surface for Agentic Coding
The new mobile integration enables users to interact with Codex sessions that are already running on a laptop, Mac mini, devbox, or managed remote environment. According to OpenAI, this means developers can initiate work, inspect active threads, review outputs, approve commands, switch models, add new context, and follow terminal output, screenshots, diffs, test results, and approvals in real time. Critically, files, credentials, permissions, and local setup remain securely on the machine where Codex is operating, ensuring data integrity.
This release pushes Codex further towards enabling long-running agent supervision. OpenAI emphasizes that the mobile app can load live state from the environment where Codex is running, facilitated by a secure relay layer. This system keeps trusted machines reachable across devices without exposing them directly to the public internet. The mobile experience is designed to streamline the short decision points that often interrupt agentic coding workflows, such as clarifying instructions or approving commands, thereby reducing downtime.
Expanding Enterprise Developer Workflows
OpenAI is also enhancing Codex for enterprise use cases with the general availability of Remote SSH and Hooks. Remote SSH allows Codex to connect directly to approved remote development environments, incorporating company dependencies, credentials, security policies, and compute resources. The Codex desktop app can automatically detect SSH hosts from a user’s SSH configuration, enabling seamless project execution within those remote machines. Hooks offer advanced customization and automation, with capabilities like scanning prompts for secrets, running validators, logging conversations, creating memories, and customizing Codex behavior by repository and directory.
Availability and Plan Tiers
The Codex mobile preview is rolling out across all ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, in supported regions for iOS and Android. Users need to update both their ChatGPT mobile app and the Codex app on macOS to access these features. Support for connecting phones to the Codex desktop app on Windows is listed as “coming soon.” While Remote SSH and Hooks are available on all plans, programmatic access tokens are exclusive to Enterprise and Business plans. Additionally, HIPAA-compliant Codex use applies only to eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces utilizing local environments.
Streamlining Development Decisions
This latest update significantly extends the utility of Codex, allowing developers to maintain oversight and provide critical input on long-running tasks without being tethered to a single workstation. By providing real-time synchronization and remote control capabilities, OpenAI aims to make AI-assisted development more fluid and responsive, accelerating project completion and enhancing developer mobility.
