AI Assists in $400,000 Bitcoin Recovery After Decade-Long Lockout
Cprkrn described yesterday as “the best day of my life” after retrieving the substantial bitcoin stash. The user had originally purchased the 5 BTC for a mere $200 to $300, highlighting the dramatic increase in value over 11 years. The funds were stuck in a Blockchain wallet, inaccessible due to a forgotten second password.
The saga unfolded in a viral X thread, where Cprkrn shared an earlier post from August 8, 2023. This post included Blockchain data confirming no transactions had occurred since April 2015. Arkham data now shows the funds were swept into a hot wallet at Hyperunit recently.
While Cprkrn initially claimed Claude “cracked this shit,” the AI’s role was more nuanced. Claude Opus 4.7 primarily assisted in locating an old wallet backup file on the user’s computer. This distinction is crucial, as it suggests the AI did not directly bypass cryptographic security, thereby not posing Q-day-level threats to existing cryptography.
The Unconventional Password Recovery Process
Cprkrn provided Claude with extensive context, including photographs of school notebooks containing illegible notes and details about his password creation habits. “I was taking pictures of school notebooks and sent them to Claude, trying everything to piece anything together,” Cprkrn told Sherwood News. The AI sifted through old MacBooks, hard drives, and cloud data, identifying patterns and correcting the order of jumbled words to reconstruct the forgotten password.
According to a Claude recap, the old wallet backup was decryptable with a previously known second password from a notebook mnemonic. Decrypting this backup revealed the private keys controlling the current funds. The user reportedly tested around 3.5 trillion password combinations with the AI’s guidance. The recovered password was famously shared as: lol420fuckthePOLICE!*:)

Navigating the Future: Security Concerns and Industry Disillusionment
Following the recovery, Cprkrn expressed immediate concerns about potential “wrench attacks” due to the newfound wealth, indicating a plan to potentially cash out. Despite being a long-time bitcoin proponent, the user admitted to being “slightly disillusioned” by the broader crypto industry recently.
When asked about future bitcoin investments, Cprkrn remained uncertain, stating, “Who knows?” The focus appears to be shifting towards personal milestones, with considerations for purchasing a house and planning a wedding. “We’ll get a couple extra flowers,” Cprkrn quipped regarding wedding plans. This incident highlights the evolving role of AI in personal digital asset management and the ongoing security challenges in the crypto space.
