Google Rolls Out Android Auto 18.1 Beta for Testers
Google has quietly pushed Android Auto 18.1 to beta testers, and it arrived without a changelog. The build, Android Auto 18.1.1643 beta, shows no visible changes from the stable 18.0 release, which points to internal fixes and under-the-hood work rather than new features.

Anyone enrolled in the beta program will get the update automatically through the Google Play Store. Everyone else can grab the APK installer manually, though that means enabling installs from outside the Play Store first.

The quiet release leaves one question hanging. Gemini, which replaced Google Assistant in late 2025, is still giving drivers trouble. Users report problems placing both regular and emergency calls, and some have likened its performance on Android Auto to Microsoft’s failed Cortana. Nothing in 18.1 suggests a fix, though without a changelog there is no way to confirm either way.

Cielo Is Now a 2027 Release

The bigger changes sit with “Cielo,” the redesign Google first announced in spring 2026. Recent beta discoveries suggest it is getting closer, but the launch is now expected in the first quarter of 2027 rather than late 2026.

Cielo brings two headline additions:

  • Widgets for information such as weather and calendar entries, built into a redesigned Coolwalk interface. Unlike CarPlay, there is no dedicated widget screen.
  • Video app support, with YouTube confirmed as one of the apps. Video plays only while the vehicle is stationary, and an audio-only mode takes over once you start driving.

Video will require a YouTube Premium subscription. Cielo will also let Android Auto use the entire screen on a wider range of infotainment units, including the circular displays found in some MINI models.

Hashlytics Take

Google is spending its attention on the flashy parts of Android Auto while the basics still wobble. Widgets and video are nice, but a driver cannot rely on an assistant that struggles to place a call, least of all an emergency one. A paywalled video feature that only works when the car is parked is a hard sell next to that. If Cielo slips into 2027, Google has a clear window to make Gemini dependable in the car first, and the lack of a changelog in 18.1 gives drivers no sign that it is using it.
