Same Game, Same Power, Different Price
Rockstar Games has said its Netflix showcase for the game was captured on Sony’s hardware. The game itself costs the same on both platforms: $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate edition, which includes extra content. Standard consoles are currently targeting 30 frames per second.
The console prices are where the platforms split:
| Model | PlayStation 5 | Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB with disc drive | $649.99 | $799.99 |
| All-digital | $599.99 | $749.99 |
That is a $150 gap on both versions. It matters more because GTA 6 launches exclusively as a digital title, which makes the cheaper disc-less consoles a more natural fit for anyone buying hardware mainly for this game.
Pro, Series S and the Ports Still to Come
The PlayStation 5 Pro offers more horsepower for higher resolutions and frame rates, and it is expected to deliver the best-looking version of GTA 6 at launch. Specific performance improvements remain unconfirmed. It costs $899.99.
On the other end, the $499.99 Xbox Series S gives players a budget way in. Its specifications are lower, but it can still deliver a respectable current-gen experience for those who care more about cost than graphical fidelity. Microsoft is also adding services such as Xbox Disc-to-Digital while introducing cloud gaming time limits, a sign of how varied its console lineup has become.
GTA 6 is currently slated only for PlayStation and Xbox. A PC release is “basically a guarantee” at a later date, following Rockstar’s established pattern of launching on consoles first and bringing games to PC about a year later. The Nintendo Switch 2 is a possible but unconfirmed future platform. Rockstar built a version for the weaker Xbox Series S, which makes a port plausible on financial grounds, and Nintendo’s hybrid already hosts classic Rockstar titles and mainstream games like Call of Duty.
Hashlytics Take
The numbers make the case with little help. If both base consoles are roughly equal in power and both are aiming for 30 frames per second, the Series X’s extra $150 buys no visible advantage, whether you pick the disc model or the digital one. With the game sold digitally, the all-digital PS5 at $599.99 is the cheapest way to play GTA 6 on full-power hardware, and only $100 above the Series S. The PS5 Pro is the one piece of hardware that could change the picture, but at $899.99 it costs $100 more than the Series X and has no confirmed GTA 6 improvements yet. Paying for it now is a bet on a promise. Until Rockstar says more, the PlayStation 5, in whichever version fits your budget, is the most compelling option for most players.
