Korean newspaper Chosun first reported that Nexon was attempting to buy the entire StarCraft franchise outright, citing a “senior industry member” as its source. The story was later revised. Nexon may now only be seeking a license to develop new mainline StarCraft games rather than owning the IP itself. The rumor currently sits at 75% probable, reflecting strong evidence but no confirmation.
Nexon is already reportedly developing a new shooter set in the StarCraft universe, one that could be unveiled at BlizzCon 2026 in just a couple of weeks. That project was previously assumed to be operating under a temporary license rather than signaling any larger deal for the franchise.
Any final decision on StarCraft rests with Microsoft’s Xbox division, which acquired Blizzard as part of the Activision deal a few years ago. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is reportedly focused on returning the division to profitability, a mandate that reportedly comes directly from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. That strategy favors large, consistently profitable franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Warcraft. StarCraft, despite its legacy, doesn’t fit that profile. It has been sixteen years since Wings of Liberty launched, and real-time strategy remains a niche genre within Xbox’s broader portfolio.
The franchise still carries outsized cultural weight, particularly in Korea. The original 1998 release became something close to a national pastime there, spawning televised leagues and turning professional players into celebrities. StarCraft II carried that legacy forward, with Korean players dominating the Global StarCraft II League and claiming roughly 70% of all prize money across the game’s professional tournaments.
Blizzard itself appears financially healthy, with recent reports naming it Xbox’s top performing studio. StarCraft, though, has remained largely dormant under that ownership. A deal with Nexon, whether a full acquisition or a licensing arrangement, could finally put new StarCraft titles in front of fans who have waited more than a decade for one.
