Samsung recently deployed a May 2026 security patch for the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra models. This update, weighing in at 506MB, addresses 36 vulnerabilities across both the Android operating system and Samsung’s One UI interface. According to SamMobile, the rollout commenced from South Korea on May 21.
The update focuses solely on under-the-hood security enhancements, bringing no new visual changes or features. Owners of US carrier versions (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) should anticipate receiving this patch sometime through June 2026, typically lagging behind the unlocked international release.
One UI 8.5 Confirmed as Final Major Update
The most significant news for Galaxy S22 users is the confirmation that One UI 8.5 will be the series’ final major software update. This mid-cycle feature update, expected to arrive in May or June 2026, is built upon Android 16, sharing the same base as One UI 8.0.
Samsung has indicated that One UI 8.5 will introduce new AI capabilities, including advanced call screening and enhanced photo editing tools. However, these features will first debut on the newer Galaxy S25 lineup and various Galaxy foldable devices before reaching the S22 series.
Crucially, the Galaxy S22 will not receive One UI 9, which is slated to be based on Android 17. When the S22 launched in February 2022 with Android 12, Samsung had promised four major OS upgrades. Android 16, delivered through One UI 8, fulfills this commitment, marking the fourth and final operating system update.
Understanding Samsung’s Update Commitments
Samsung’s original policy for the Galaxy S22 series guaranteed four years of major operating system updates and five years of security patches. The current security patch schedule extends until February 2027, after which all software support for the series will conclude entirely.
This policy contrasts sharply with Samsung’s more recent commitments for newer devices. For example, the Galaxy S24 series now boasts an extended seven-year update promise, a move reportedly influenced by Google’s long-term support for its Pixel devices.
Implications for Current and Prospective Owners
Despite the impending end of major software updates, the Galaxy S22 series remains a capable device. Its hardware, featuring either the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 chip depending on the region, continues to handle daily tasks efficiently.
For existing owners, there is no immediate pressure to upgrade, especially with security patches guaranteed until February 2027. However, those considering a secondhand purchase should weigh the limited future software support. Refurbished S22 units currently retail for under £500 in the UK and approximately $400 in the US, presenting a potentially tempting value proposition against new mid-range smartphones, provided the software lifecycle is factored into the decision.
The Galaxy S22’s transition out of major software updates highlights the evolving landscape of smartphone longevity. As manufacturers like Samsung extend support windows for newer flagships, older models serve as a benchmark for how long consumers can realistically expect their devices to remain current and secure.
