Supermassive Games Cuts Over 70 Staff in Layoffs
Supermassive Games, the studio behind horror titles like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has reportedly laid off more than 70 staff members. The cuts follow a redundancy consultation process the studio initiated in August.

The layoffs affect various departments, including developers, artists, and producers. Even members of the studio’s senior leadership team are among those impacted.

How the Process Played Out

Supermassive first revealed the possibility of job cuts on August 11, stating at the time that up to 75 positions could be made redundant. That process has now concluded, with former employees confirming their departure on social media over the past week.

Frank Tindle, Supermassive’s former IT and Facilities Director, shared his news on LinkedIn after spending 16 years at the studio. Before these cuts, Supermassive reportedly employed over 400 people.

Supermassive has not yet commented on the completed layoffs. When the initial consultation was announced in August, the studio called the process a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company and said it would prioritize supporting affected colleagues.

Part of a Larger Pattern

Supermassive isn’t alone in facing this kind of restructuring. Ninja Theory reportedly began layoffs around the same period, pointing to a wider trend of consolidation across the gaming sector.

What this means for Supermassive’s development pipeline remains unclear, and the studio’s silence on specifics leaves several open questions about upcoming projects. For now, the broader picture is one an increasingly familiar one across gaming: smaller teams, tighter budgets, and studios absorbing cuts even while still shipping titles.
