Workday & Google Cloud expand AI agent integration
Workday and Google Cloud have significantly expanded their strategic partnership, integrating Workday AI agents directly into Gemini Enterprise. This move aims to embed critical HR and finance functions within Google Cloud’s existing workplace tools, streamlining operations and enhancing user experience for employees, managers, and finance teams globally. The collaboration also establishes Gemini as the default AI model for Sana for Workday, the company’s AI assistant.

Workday AI Agents Arrive in Gemini Enterprise

The deepened alliance brings Workday’s AI capabilities into the heart of Google Cloud’s ecosystem. Eligible customers can now access the Workday Sana Self-Service Agent within Gemini Enterprise in early access. This integration allows staff to query Workday data directly within Gemini Enterprise, receiving accurate answers while respecting existing access controls and policies.

The functionalities offered by these agents are extensive, aiming to minimize the need to switch between applications:

  • For Employees: Users can check leave balances, update personal details, view payslips, and review tax withholding information through conversational prompts.
  • For Managers: Leaders can efficiently review team goals, approve timesheets in bulk, initiate performance reviews, and submit payroll input from a unified interface.
  • For Finance Teams: Professionals can inquire about expense and travel policies, determine eligibility for corporate cards, and receive assistance in creating requests or opening cases when action is required.

This partnership also supports advanced agent-to-agent and agent-to-user-interface approaches, alongside a Model Context Protocol, enabling AI agents to seamlessly pass tasks between one another within a single workflow.

Integrating Data for Enhanced Analytics

Beyond user-facing applications, the companies are strengthening the connection between Workday Data Cloud and Google Cloud’s data tools. This integration will enable customers to query data between Workday Data Cloud and Google Cloud Lakehouse utilizing zero-copy technology. This innovative approach means information remains in its original environment, preventing duplication and ensuring existing permissions and business rules are maintained. The result is the ability to combine Workday data with other business data for comprehensive analysis. Furthermore, agents within Gemini Enterprise will support conversational analytics, allowing employees to ask questions about business data directly for faster insights.

Alphabet itself is among the first organizations to leverage this expanded partnership, planning to use the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform to build and run a custom Workday agent for administrators to automate key workflows. Industry partners, including Accenture, Deloitte, and KPMG, are also collaborating with Workday and Google Cloud to assist customers in identifying and deploying practical AI use cases across various business functions.

According to Gerrit Kazmaier, President, Product and Technology at Workday, the goal is to provide HR and finance functions at users’ fingertips, rather than scattered across multiple applications. Karthik Narain, Chief Product and Business Officer at Google Cloud, emphasized that this partnership significantly expands integrations, making AI agents more useful and accessible across the enterprise. He stated that Gemini and Google Cloud will now underpin some of the most critical workflows in HR and finance departments globally, helping employees get faster, more accurate answers and streamline repetitive tasks.

Workday’s Evolving Role in the Enterprise

This announcement reflects Workday’s strategic push to evolve its software from a destination application into a pervasive service embedded within other digital work environments. By making Gemini the default model for Sana, Workday is closely aligning its AI strategy with Google’s large language model stack, while still offering customers the flexibility to choose alternative models if needed. Jo Anne Ruhl, Vice President and Managing Director for Workday Australia and New Zealand, highlighted that this agreement directly addresses the demand from local organizations for practical AI applications in daily operations. This deepening integration promises to empower AI agents to support critical workflows, allowing employees to access information faster and focus on high-value tasks.
