When opened, the iPhone Duo reveals a 7.6 inch inner display, making it the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever built. Closed, a 5.4 inch outer display keeps the phone pocketable while still offering 90 percent of the screen area found on an iPhone 18 Pro.
Two Screens, One Continuous Experience
The inner 7.6 inch Super Retina XDR display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and both displays share the same aspect ratio so content scales proportionally whether the phone is open or closed. A nano texture finish on the inner screen reduces glare and helps minimize crease visibility, while a new FaceTime camera sits hidden beneath the display itself.
Both screens include ProMotion, Always On capability, and up to 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple Pencil with USB-C support is expected to arrive later this year.
Built for the Long Haul
Durability was clearly a priority here. The Duo is crafted from grade 5 titanium and carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance. Ceramic Shield covers the back, while the front runs Ceramic Shield 2, offering three times better scratch resistance than the standard version.
The hinge itself is engineered from over 100 individual components for a smooth, consistent feel over time. Internal support ribs and ceramic fiber inserts add structural rigidity, and the inner display gets its own scratch resistant coating plus a custom polymer cover layer.
A Camera System Built Around the Fold
The camera setup includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera capable of 2x optical Telephoto, alongside a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera identical to the one found in iPhone 18 Pro models and capable of macro photography.
The fold itself unlocks camera features that simply weren’t possible before:
- Smart Take automatically captures photos at the right moment
- Duo Preview lets subjects see themselves on the outer display while someone else takes their photo
- 4K120 fps recording in Dolby Vision, with Cinematic effects available after capture
iOS 27 Rethinks the Interface for Two Screens
iOS 27 has been rebuilt around the Duo’s form factor rather than simply stretched to fit it. Lock Screen controls and the Home Screen Dock now sit along the side to make better use of vertical space, and opening the phone reveals two full Home Screen pages alongside Today View.
The Dynamic Island has been redesigned to work vertically and expands to support Live Activities. Apple’s own apps are optimized for the new layout, and third party developers get new SDKs to adapt their apps accordingly. Split View also arrives on iPhone for the first time, letting two apps run side by side.
A20 Pro Chip Handles Performance and AI
Powering the Duo is the same A20 Pro chip found in iPhone 18 Pro models, paired here with an advanced thermal management system and a custom vapor chamber. Together they deliver up to 35 percent better sustained performance compared to the iPhone 17 Pro.
The chip includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine built for AI workloads. A dual battery architecture rounds things out, offering up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display or 44 hours on the outer display alone.
Siri Gets a Bigger Role
The Duo ships with access to Siri AI, arriving in beta alongside iOS 27. Built on Apple Intelligence, the updated Siri is meant to feel more conversational, drawing on personal context and onscreen awareness to respond more naturally. Users can also write directly with Siri’s help.
Apple Intelligence brings a few other additions along with it, including Spatial Reframing for photos and more photorealistic results in Image Playground. Safari’s new Notify Me feature tracks changes on web pages over time. Apple continues to lean on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to keep these features privacy focused.
Apple has not yet disclosed pricing for the iPhone Duo, leaving one major question still open ahead of its October launch.
