Google unveils Googlebook AI laptops powered by Gemini

Google has officially announced its new Googlebook line of AI-powered laptops, deeply integrating its Gemini artificial intelligence. This move signifies Google’s ambitious entry into a competitive hardware market, aiming to redefine the personal computing experience. The devices will combine Android and ChromeOS foundations, promising a more personalized and proactive user interface.

Google today announced the Googlebook series, designed from the ground up with Gemini at its core. These new laptops will run on a hybrid software foundation, blending elements of Android and ChromeOS. Google states the Googlebooks are engineered for “Gemini Intelligence,” emphasizing a personalized and proactive user experience. The initial launch partners include Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, who will bring these machines to market.

Gemini Intelligence Powers New User Interactions

A standout feature is the innovative Magic Pointer, replacing the traditional cursor. Users can activate Gemini by wiggling this pointer, enabling contextual suggestions and answers based on screen content. For instance, pointing at a date in an email can automatically initiate a meeting setup, while selecting two images allows for their simultaneous visualization.

The Magic Pointer also incorporates “ask,” “compare,” and “combine” tools to enhance user interaction. Furthermore, Googlebooks will introduce Create My Widget, a new Android feature allowing users to generate custom widgets via a Gemini prompt. Gemini leverages internet search and connects with Google apps such as Gmail and Calendar to craft personalized dashboards for widget creation.

Seamless Integration with Android and Partner Ecosystem

The Googlebook’s reliance on Android aims to facilitate smoother transitions between the laptop and Android smartphones. Apps from a connected smartphone will be accessible on the Googlebook, offering functionality akin to Apple’s iPhone Mirroring.

The Quick Access feature will enable users to view, search, or insert files directly from their smartphone onto the laptop without requiring explicit file transfers. Google indicates that the first Googlebooks will boast “premium craftsmanship and materials,” available in various form factors. Each device will prominently feature a “glowbar” on its lid, serving as a distinct Googlebook identifier.

Pricing and Availability Remain Key Questions

Google has not yet disclosed specific pricing for the Googlebook lineup. Given the emphasis on “premium” materials, speculation suggests these devices could be positioned above Apple’s recently introduced MacBook Neo. However, it is also plausible that Googlebooks might match MacBook Neo-level pricing to directly compete on both cost and build quality. The first Googlebook models are anticipated to launch this fall. This announcement follows Google’s recent expansions of Gemini, including a Skills library for Chrome and a native macOS app, alongside confirmations of Gemini powering a new Siri later this year.
