OpenAI’s Accelerated Phone Strategy Driven by IPO and Competition
Kuo’s revised timeline cites two primary catalysts for the acceleration: OpenAI’s planned initial public offering and mounting pressure from rivals developing AI agent phones. The company previously indicated mass production would occur in 2028, but competitive dynamics and investor appeal have prompted the faster schedule. If development remains on track, combined 2027-2028 shipments could reach approximately 30 million units, according to Kuo’s analysis.
Hardware Partners and Processor Specifications
MediaTek and Qualcomm have been selected as chip partners, with Luxshare Precision Industry serving as the exclusive manufacturing partner. MediaTek appears better positioned to become the sole processor supplier, using a customized version of the Dimensity 9600 built on TSMC’s N2P node in the second half of 2026.
The device’s core differentiator is its image signal processor, featuring an enhanced HDR pipeline designed to improve real-world sensing capabilities. The phone will incorporate two dedicated AI processors for parallel task handling (vision and language processing simultaneously), fast memory, expanded storage, and security features to isolate processes.
OpenAI’s Broader Hardware Ecosystem and Jony Ive’s Role
The smartphone announcement complicates OpenAI’s existing hardware roadmap. Following its acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup io Products in May 2025, OpenAI positioned Ive’s first product as a “third core device” alongside MacBook Pro and iPhone. Originally scheduled for late 2025, this product has been delayed to less than two years from November 2025.
Ive’s device, now reported to be a smart speaker with a camera launching in early 2027, deliberately avoids a screen to reduce device dependency. Other products in development include smart glasses, a smart lamp, and potentially earbuds, though timelines for those remain further out.
Strategic Vision for AI Agents and Market Implications
OpenAI’s smartphone strategy reflects CEO Sam Altman’s conviction that controlling both operating system and hardware is essential for delivering comprehensive AI agent services. The company believes AI agents will fundamentally reshape mobile interaction, shifting focus from launching individual applications to completing context-aware tasks within a seamless interface.
This hardware expansion positions OpenAI as a direct competitor to Apple across multiple product categories. Apple is rumored to be developing smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, an AI pendant, and a smart home hub with enhanced Siri capabilities, creating an emerging hardware rivalry between the two companies.
OpenAI’s dual 2027 launch strategy, smartphone and Ive’s smart speaker, marks a critical inflection point for the company’s hardware ambitions. Success hinges on delivering AI agent experiences that justify hardware ownership over software-only alternatives, a proposition that remains unproven in the mass market.
