Wear OS Gets Smarter Workouts
Wear OS users will notice more precise workout routes this month. The improvement comes from server-side processing of raw location data, aimed at giving fitness enthusiasts sharper accuracy without requiring any action on their part.
What Rolled Out This Month
The core updates landed on with Google Play services v26.31, which adds new developer features for account management on phones and Wear OS, plus bug fixes across Developer Services for Auto, PC, phone, and Wear OS platforms.
The same day brought Google Play Store v52.7, letting users open app details directly from Top Charts on larger phone screens. Android AICore also received improvements for audio streaming, efficiency, and diagnostics across PC and phone.
Earlier in the month, on August 3, Google shipped two more updates:
- Google Play services v26.30 improved the user experience for Wallet passes on phones
- Google Play Store v52.6 added updated branding for HSDP persistent overlay affordance (HOPA) and enhanced movie and TV show discovery in search results
The Play Store’s Apps Home now features league-specific carousels for major sports events, with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup serving as a launch example that connects users directly to streaming providers. Tablet users also gain the ability to browse app content from their installed apps directly within the Play Store.
How the Rollout Works
These updates are part of Google’s regular monthly system releases, covering Android phones, tablets, Wear OS, Google/Android TV, Android Auto, and PC. The changes touch first-party apps like Adaptive Connectivity Services, Android System Intelligence, and Google Play Protect Service.
Users can check for updates through the Settings app, typically under “Privacy & security” then “System services” on Pixel devices. Google notes that feature rollout is gradual, and some capabilities may take months to reach all users after first appearing in the changelog.
What This Signals
The pattern here is worth watching. Google isn’t just patching bugs, it’s steadily building Play Store into a content discovery hub that goes beyond app downloads. Sports carousels, tablet app browsing, and richer search results all point toward a Play Store that wants users spending more time inside it, not just visiting to install something and leave. Combined with the Wallet improvements, this month’s updates read less like routine maintenance and more like incremental groundwork for Google’s broader ambition to make Android services feel like a connected ecosystem rather than a collection of separate apps.
