NEC Partners with Anthropic to Build Enterprise AI Solutions

NEC Corporation announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic on April 23, 2026, positioning itself as Japan’s first global partner of the AI safety company. The collaboration targets enterprise AI adoption across Japan’s financial, manufacturing, and government sectors, with both organizations jointly developing secure, industry-specific solutions built on Claude technology.

Bridging Japan’s Enterprise AI Gap with Trusted Solutions

Japanese enterprises face significant barriers to AI adoption. Organizations struggle with IT talent shortages, limited operational know-how, and stringent compliance requirements unique to regulated industries. NEC and Anthropic aim to address these gaps by creating AI solutions designed explicitly for Japan’s demanding sectors, where security and regulatory alignment are non-negotiable.

The partnership leverages Claude Cowork, an AI agent for desktop environments, combined with NEC’s deep industry expertise. This combination enables rapid development of tailored solutions without forcing organizations to compromise on transparency or control.

Three Core Pillars of the Collaboration

The partnership unfolds across three interconnected initiatives:

  • Industry-Specific Solution Development: NEC and Anthropic will jointly build secure AI solutions for finance, manufacturing, and local government, integrating customer expertise with cutting-edge AI capabilities while maintaining strict security and compliance standards.
  • Integration with NEC BluStellar Scenario: Claude (Claude Opus 4.7) and Claude Code will be embedded into NEC BluStellar Scenario, NEC’s value-creation framework, starting with data-driven management and customer experience transformation modules before expanding across additional scenarios.
  • Global AI Talent Development: Approximately 30,000 NEC Group employees worldwide will gain access to Claude, with the company establishing an internal Center of Excellence to cultivate AI-native engineering talent capable of building advanced solutions.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Operations with AI

Beyond general enterprise applications, the partnership enhances NEC’s cybersecurity services. NEC is deploying Claude technology within its Security Operations Center (SOC) services to defend Japanese and global enterprises against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. This integration combines Anthropic’s cutting-edge AI research with NEC’s operational security expertise.

The Client Zero Advantage

NEC’s internal Client Zero initiative provides a testing ground for these solutions. The company has already embedded AI agents into its own development workflows, from design through testing, demonstrating measurable productivity gains. This real-world validation informs the joint development roadmap and accelerates deployment timelines for external customers.

Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer of Anthropic, emphasized the alignment: By bringing together the strengths of both companies, we are dedicated to delivering safe and secure AI agents that Japanese enterprises can adopt with full confidence. Toshifumi Yoshizaki, NEC’s Executive Officer and COO, added that the partnership enables NEC to maximize the potential of AI in the Japanese market and further strengthen our capabilities in AI and AI agent implementation through large-scale deployments and collaboration.

Building Japan’s AI-Native Engineering Foundation

The 30,000-employee deployment represents a significant structural shift within NEC. By integrating Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent, across the organization, NEC aims to construct one of Japan’s largest AI-native engineering teams. This workforce will be supported by Anthropic’s technical training and expertise, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of capability development and innovation.

The initiative signals confidence from both organizations that enterprise AI adoption in Japan requires not just technology, but institutional transformation and widespread skill development across organizations that implement it.
