PS5 UI Update Adds Crunchyroll Hub in Spring 2027
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a new PlayStation 5 UI update that puts a dedicated Crunchyroll hub on the console’s home screen. It is due around Spring 2027, and it arrives without the broader interface overhaul many players have been waiting for.

Crunchyroll Gets Its Own Spot on the PS5 Home Screen

Sony, which acquired Crunchyroll in 2020, says the hub is meant to meet fans where they already are. The company sees a big overlap between anime and gaming audiences, and the hub is its attempt to bring them together on PlayStation 5. It will offer:

  • A central place for anime and anime-inspired games
  • Quick access to the full Crunchyroll app

Current subscribers get a shorter path to their shows. Players who haven’t tried the service may find anime through games, characters, or worlds they already enjoy.

The Home Screen Redesign Sony Pulled Back

The Crunchyroll hub caught many players off guard. They were expecting a general PS5 UI overhaul earlier this year, and Sony did roll out a UI update to select users in April 2026. That version redesigned the home screen and streamlined several elements. Sony quietly revoked the changes the following month, and there has been no word on when that work resumes.

Hashlytics Take

A hub for a service Sony owns is the easy win. It is a self-contained surface that promotes its own property, with no risk of disrupting how millions of people already navigate the console. The harder job is the home screen redesign Sony pulled after a month, and a niche content section does nothing to settle that. If the general PlayStation UI refresh doesn’t return before Spring 2027, players will reasonably conclude that Sony’s priorities lie elsewhere.
