Kojima Productions’ Physint faced an abrupt halt from PlayStation, catching the team off guard. Shinji Hirano, president of Kojima Productions, said he “just went totally blank when they told me.” The project has since found a new home. Xbox will now publish Physint, taking over development and release responsibilities from here.
Kojima Feared for the Studio’s Survival
Kojima himself admitted he was “shocked and surprised” by PlayStation’s decision. His first thought wasn’t about the game itself but about the studio staying afloat. As an independent entity, Kojima Productions relies heavily on external funding to keep operating, which made the cancellation feel far more threatening than a typical delay.
The situation echoed the cancellation of PT years earlier, a memory Kojima clearly hasn’t shaken. He had already brought in actors and collaborators for Physint, which made the prospect of another abrupt halt especially painful. The timing stung too. This project was meant to mark both the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions and Kojima’s 40th year in game development.
Xbox Steps In
The shift to Xbox publishing gives Physint a second chance, and it’s a reminder of just how fluid game development has become. Projects changing platforms mid-development isn’t unheard of. Other studios are navigating their own turbulence too, like the recent delay of Metroidvania RPG Blighted to 2027.
Xbox still has to decide whether Physint will launch as a console exclusive, a call that will shape how many players actually get to play it and how far the game’s reach extends once it ships.
Kojima Says the PlayStation Relationship Is Fine
Despite everything, Kojima insists his relationship with PlayStation hasn’t soured. He described corporations as “living things” and said there’s no real dispute between him and Sony. He still uses Sony products personally, which he pointed to as evidence the ties are genuinely intact rather than just diplomatic language for the cameras.
The whole episode is a fairly stark illustration of how fragile the relationship between independent studios and platform holders can be, even at the highest level. It also leaves an open question worth watching: how much of Physint‘s original vision survives the move to Xbox, and how much gets reshaped along the way.
