Xbox CEO Sharma Unveils Post-Layoff Growth Strategy
Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, has detailed a comprehensive strategy to revitalize Microsoft’s gaming division. The plan comes after 1,600 employees were laid off earlier this month. Microsoft reported double-digit revenue declines for both hardware and games/services, with total annual revenue dropping by $1.7 billion.

The Four Pillars Strategy

In a July 30 memo to staff, Sharma outlined four core priorities designed to reverse the revenue decline. Each pillar targets a different part of Xbox’s ecosystem:

  • CORE: Strengthen the platform through console experiences
  • CONTENT: Grow great games into global franchises
  • CREATION: Make Minecraft the world’s premier creator platform
  • CONNECTION: Extend the worlds that fans love across new mediums

Reaching Half a Billion Daily Players by 2030

Xbox currently has 100 million daily players, according to Sharma’s memo. The long-term vision is significantly more ambitious: entertaining over a billion people each day. By 2030, Xbox aims to reach the midpoint of that goal with 500 million daily users.

Achieving this would require nearly 50 percent annual growth in the player base. For context, that’s roughly equivalent to adding the entire current player base every two years. It’s an aggressive target that signals Sharma’s commitment to fundamental expansion rather than incremental gains.

Gaming Beyond the Console

Sharma positioned Xbox as one of the largest stadiums in the world, but acknowledged that the console alone cannot reach her growth targets. The strategy expands Xbox’s presence across multiple platforms:

  • PC gaming
  • Cloud gaming
  • Mobile and other emerging platforms

This multi-platform approach treats the console as a flagship experience rather than the only entry point into the Xbox ecosystem.

Monetizing Major Franchises Beyond Gaming

Sharma’s memo signals aggressive expansion of Xbox franchises into entertainment and consumer products. Major franchises like Fallout will be monetized across multiple channels including film, television, consumer products, sponsorship, and live experiences. The memo specifically mentions new partnerships globally, including China, suggesting Xbox is pursuing international expansion seriously.

Investment in existing money-makers like Candy Crush and Minecraft will also increase. According to The Verge, Sharma emphasized focusing on biggest new ideas alongside existing franchises, though specific details on new projects remain undisclosed.

The Road Ahead

The strategy represents a shift from defending Xbox’s position to expanding it aggressively. Layoffs reduce costs while the four-pillar approach targets growth across hardware, software, and entertainment. Whether the market can absorb Xbox’s expansion ambitions while the company rebuilds trust with remaining staff remains the critical question moving forward.
