Xbox Console Prices Soar Significantly in August
Microsoft is raising Xbox Series X and S console prices again, effective . This marks the second price increase for the current generation consoles, with the company citing escalating memory and storage costs as the driving factor. The DRAM shortage that’s been squeezing hardware makers for over a year continues to pressure component prices. Microsoft says storage and memory costs have already jumped 2.5 times over, with projections showing another doubling by fall 2027.

How Much Prices Are Going Up

The 512 GB models are getting a $100 increase, while 1 TB variants jump by $150. Microsoft is also discontinuing the 2 TB SKUs entirely.

Here’s the new pricing starting August 1:

  • 512 GB Series S: $499.99
  • 1 TB Series S: $599.99
  • 512 GB Series X Digital: $749.99
  • 1 TB Series X: $799.99

PlayStation Also Raised Prices

Xbox isn’t alone in this. Sony’s PlayStation 5 recently went through the same treatment. The standard PS5 now sits at $649.99, the Digital Edition at $599.99, and the PS5 Pro at $899.99.

When Sony raised PS5 prices earlier in 2026, the company actually saw record sales spikes as consumers rushed to buy before the increases took effect. Microsoft likely expects something similar.

The price hikes come at a challenging moment for Xbox. Recent reports indicate layoffs are underway at Xbox Game Studios, part of broader struggles the division has faced. Microsoft’s overall Xbox revenue has been declining, making these console price increases a particularly sensitive move.

The company announced the changes on Xbox Wire, framing them as necessary adjustments to address the realities of current hardware economics. Whether players will accept another round of price increases remains to be seen, though history suggests many will preemptively buy before the deadline hits.
