Xbox Fans Demand End to Layoffs on Player Voice Portal
The Xbox community is making its frustration heard. A trending post on Microsoft’s Player Voice Portal, a feedback platform launched earlier this year, is demanding an immediate halt to studio closures and layoffs. The call for action has accumulated over 3,000 upvotes in just one week, signaling deep concern among players about the future of the company’s gaming division.

What Players Are Saying

The top-trending post, authored by community member Witt Yao, doesn’t mince words. It opens with a stark accusation:

The layoff of 3,200 workers at XBOX across Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, Obsidian, id Software, and XBOX Game Studios is unacceptable. This continues a pattern that has led to 10,000+ layoffs at XBOX in as little as two years.

The post catalogs the human cost of these decisions: Ninja Theory, Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios have either been shuttered or had their futures jeopardized. Numerous games have been canceled. The frustration from players is palpable.

Five Specific Demands

Yao’s post lays out concrete demands the community wants Microsoft to address:

  • Two-year moratorium on layoffs to keep development teams intact and allow projects to reach completion
  • Reconsider profit expectations for Xbox, noting the division already remains profitable
  • Good faith negotiations with unions and developers to represent both worker and player interests
  • Withhold executive bonuses during periods of layoffs, framing such reductions as leadership failures
  • Invest in game developers rather than unpopular technologies like AI

The Disconnect Between Announcements and Actions

The timing of the cuts adds to community anger. Microsoft recently showcased footage for State of Decay 3 and a new Hellblade sequel with fanfare. Days later, Undead Labs and Ninja Theory faced significant staff reductions. This pattern erodes player confidence in whether announced games will actually ship and whether the developers making them have stable futures.

I especially agree that layoffs are a failure of leadership, one Xbox player commented on the feedback portal. These are talented developers. If you cannot figure out how to make money with their skill, the failure is with the leadership.

The Numbers Behind the Outcry

The scale of cuts paints a grim picture for the division. In early 2024, roughly 1,900 Xbox staff were laid off. Later that year, 650 more positions were cut. July 2025 saw another wave. Looking ahead, an additional 1,600 employees face potential layoffs over the next 12 months.

While Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella received $96 million in total compensation for fiscal 2025, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s exact compensation package remains undisclosed. Still, players see a direct contradiction between executive compensation and mass layoffs.

Players Are Voting With Their Wallets

The frustration extends beyond forum posts. Another player stated on the portal: There is absolutely no reason to let this many people with that much experience go. Microsoft is taking away the livelihood of thousands of employees to benefit no one. I will not be renewing my Game Pass.

That sentiment appears to be spreading. The Player Voice Portal has become a barometer of community sentiment, and it’s registering deep dissatisfaction with how Microsoft is managing its gaming future.
