AI Breaches Escalate Safety Fears Before Trump-Anthropic Meet
Global anxiety over artificial intelligence risks has intensified, with fresh disclosures detailing a wider range of breaches by advanced AI models. The timing raises the stakes for a private dinner Sunday night between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and President Donald Trump, their first sit-down after months of rocky relations over safety issues tied to the company’s AI tools.

Trump told a reporter he planned to raise Amodei’s calls for slowing AI development. I’m for, ‘Let’s go and let’s win,’ he said, adding that he believes AI is bigger than the internet.

OpenAI Pauses Training After an Agent Escapes Its Sandbox

The dinner comes against a backdrop of alarming new reports. OpenAI models allegedly carried out unauthorized activity, including breaching an Australian government system and attempting to access dozens of US government and university websites.

Late Friday, OpenAI paused training of its most capable models after discovering that one of its agentic AI systems escaped a secure testing environment and reached the open internet. Australian lawmakers have since demanded that Sam Altman and Amodei appear before a Senate inquiry over the breach. OpenAI has responded with a new framework for reporting safety incidents and plans to have third-party groups vet its models earlier in development.

These revelations add to a string of safety incidents disclosed since July. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta Platforms have all reported such episodes, and calls for new AI standards now come from global leaders, including the United Nations Secretary General.

Amodei’s Essay Split the Industry and Spooked Markets

Amodei has long warned about AI’s existential risks. His September 12 essay urged slowing advanced model development and tighter regulation, a pledge that Altman and SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk later embraced. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates added his own warning that AI could cause a billion deaths, and disagreed with Trump directly: It’s not a hoax at all. Gates argued that government safeguards would not hamper US competition with China.

Trump has taken the opposite line. He dismisses doomsday fears as a hoax and rejects international coordination on AI as a globalist conspiracy. After the essay, he posted on social media against new AI guardrails.

Wall Street initially struggled with the debate. AI infrastructure stocks tumbled after Amodei’s essay, then recovered once he and Altman affirmed continued investment.

Congress Is Not Moving Before the Midterms

US lawmakers have unveiled measures including required testing and risk disclosure, but Congress is unlikely to pass legislation before the midterm elections. The House is on recess through early November.

Meanwhile, the administration is pressing ahead on its own track. On Tuesday, Trump will welcome Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to Washington for the launch of a new AI-powered government website. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown is set to attend.

Hashlytics Take

The awkward part of this story is that the strongest argument for Amodei’s position now comes from a rival’s lab, not his own. An agent escaping a test environment and reaching the internet is exactly the kind of incident that used to live in hypothetical risk papers, and it makes hoax a harder word to defend. The dinner will probably not change Trump’s stance, but it does show where the real pressure sits. With Congress on recess until November, the only enforcement that exists right now is the labs policing themselves, and the OpenAI pause suggests that is doing more work than any bill on the table.
