Apple Replaces iPhone 18 Pro Max Units Losing AT&T Service
Apple will replace some iPhone 18 Pro Max units for free after confirming an issue causing certain devices on AT&T’s network to lose cellular service entirely. Software updates will not fix phones already affected. They only prevent the problem from happening to devices that haven’t hit it yet.

A small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T are impacted, with devices randomly losing cellular connection and switching to SOS mode. That means no calls, no texts, no mobile data, though Wi-Fi keeps working fine. Reddit users were first to report the failures, and AT&T followed up by texting affected customers directly to warn them.

What the Update Actually Fixes

Apple released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and is urging all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to install it immediately. A carrier settings update is rolling out alongside it. Together, these are designed to stop the service loss from occurring in the first place. They do nothing for phones that have already dropped off AT&T’s network. iOS 27.0.1 also quietly fixes a separate restart issue affecting the standard iPhone 18 Pro.

If your iPhone 18 Pro Max has already lost service, no software update will bring it back. Apple says these devices need a free hardware replacement, and there are two ways to get one:

  • Contact Apple Support or AT&T directly and explain the issue
  • Visit an Apple Store or AT&T location in person, mention any updates you’ve already installed, and request the replacement

What’s Actually Causing This

Neither Apple nor AT&T has officially named a cause. Speculation has landed on the phone’s cellular hardware, and CNET pointed out that the US version runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem, a detail confirmed by an iFixit teardown.

That theory has a hole in it though. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max use the identical modem and haven’t shown this problem at scale. The 18 Pro Max does have a new millimeter wave antenna, which is an unconfirmed but plausible suspect given it’s the one meaningful hardware change in that area. For now, the actual cause stays officially unknown.

AT&T says its top priority is ensuring customers can stay connected and that it’s working with Apple to make it right. The carrier is telling affected customers to update to iOS 27.0.1 right away while the hardware replacement process runs in parallel.

Hashlytics Take

Apple jumping straight to free hardware replacements, without waiting to confirm a root cause, is the more interesting story here. That’s not a company hedging on a minor bug. Antenna and modem issues are notoriously hard to diagnose from software telemetry alone, which is probably why Apple skipped the usual wait and see approach entirely. If the millimeter wave antenna turns out to be the actual culprit, expect this to stay narrowly scoped to AT&T’s network rather than becoming a broader 18 Pro Max recall.
