Stranger Than Heaven Set for Winter Launch Across Multiple Platforms

The highly anticipated action RPG, Stranger Than Heaven, will arrive this winter on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Notably, the game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. This multi-platform launch aims to bring the ambitious new title to a broad audience of players.

Unveiling Makoto Daito’s Half-Century Saga Across Japan

Stranger Than Heaven centers on protagonist Makoto Daito, whose life unfolds over half a century across five distinct Japanese cities. His journey oscillates between a career criminal and a working showman. The narrative features a diverse cast of performers from film, television, and music, including Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Moeka Hoshi, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, and Bunta Sagawara. Musicians like Snoop Dogg, Cordell Broadus, Ado, Tori Kelly, and Satoshi Fujihara also contribute to the ensemble.

Makoto, born to Japanese and American parents, faces significant prejudice due to his mixed heritage after his parents’ passing. Alongside his companion Yu Shinjo, he stows away to Japan in 1915. There, he encounters Orpheus, a smuggler who mentors him in the criminal underworld. Players will navigate Makoto’s life through five historical periods and locations, each representing a pivotal moment in his story:

  • 1915, Kokura, Fukuoka: A bustling, smoke-scorched town known for one of the world’s largest foundries.
  • 1929, Kure, Hiroshima: A port town dominated by Japan’s largest naval arsenal and yakuza influence.
  • 1943, Minami, Osaka: Western Japan’s biggest entertainment district, set against wartime tensions.
  • 1951, Atami, Shizuoka: A vibrant seaside tourist destination in postwar Japan.
  • 1965, Shinjuku, Tokyo: Japan’s iconic pleasure district, characterized by chaos.

A Unique Blend of Crime, Showmanship, and Deep Combat

The gameplay in Stranger Than Heaven intertwines music and violence, reflecting Makoto’s dual life. Under Orpheus’s guidance, Makoto embraces the role of a showman, contributing to and creating musical acts. This involves a robust management simulation where players scout for singers and performers in each era. Players will also collect diverse sounds, from train rumbles to broom sweeps, to compose original music. Success hinges on crafting setlists, selecting suitable performers, and curating production design to guide Makoto’s rise in the entertainment industry.

Combat introduces a deeper fighting system than previous action-combat Yakuza titles. Players will independently control Makoto’s left and right sides, allowing for nuanced actions like punching with one hand while blocking with the other. Combos are mediated by gamepad triggers and bumpers. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has also confirmed a wide array of customizable and upgradeable weapons, including katanas, knives, and hammers.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio appears poised to deliver a historical epic that merges its established strengths, including ensemble casts, intricate narratives, historical settings, and cinematic framing. The first minute of the reveal trailer strongly suggests that Stranger Than Heaven acts as a prequel to the Like A Dragon/Yakuza series, potentially serving as an origin story for the notorious Tojo clan. Players will need to await the game’s full release to discover any other familiar connections.
