September 16th Appears in Retailer Database
An Amazon Japan leak indicates a September 16th release for the “Specialist version” of 007 First Light on Nintendo Switch 2. That timing would place the launch at the tail end of summer. Keep in mind that retailers sometimes use placeholder dates before official announcements, so this isn’t confirmed by IO Interactive yet.
Physical Box, Digital Core
The listing reveals the game will ship as a “Game-Key Card” format. Here’s what that means: you buy a physical box at retail, but the cartridge is just a key. You still need to download the full game digitally.
The problem is the file size. 007 First Light demands over 75 GB of storage space on Switch 2. Nintendo’s cartridge capacity maxes out at 64 GB. Every player will need to download a substantial portion of the game regardless of whether they buy physical or digital.
Storage Concerns for Collectors
For collectors who prefer physical games, this is frustrating. You’re paying for a box and cartridge, but you’re not getting a complete, self-contained product. It mirrors concerns PlayStation players have raised about disc abandonment. IO Interactive clearly prioritizes getting the full experience onto the console, but at the cost of traditional cartridge convenience.
Why the Delay Happened
IO Interactive delayed the Switch 2 port to allow for further optimization. CEO Hakan Abrak told The Game Business in May that a working build existed. The studio focused on avoiding a compromised experience
on the Nintendo console. That extra time suggests they’re serious about quality.
What Performance Looks Like
The file size on Switch 2 appears similar to its PC and console versions, suggesting a full-featured port with minimal cuts. The game runs decently
on Steam Deck, which is a decent indicator for the Switch 2 version.
Most likely scenario: a locked 30 frames per second mode with DLSS for sharper image quality. Fans are hoping for a smoother launch than Hitman World of Assassination, which needed multiple patches to fix stuttering issues.
The Real Question
IO Interactive has had several months since the initial May launch to refine this port. The September 16th date would give them roughly four more months if accurate. The studio’s commitment to avoiding compromise suggests they’re treating this seriously. Whether 007 First Light on Switch 2 actually delivers on that promise remains to be seen once it launches.
