Apple Addresses iPhone Duo Screen Cracks Near Hinge
Apple has acknowledged that the inner display on its new iPhone Duo can crack near the hinge, just days after the foldable went on sale at $1,999. The company says only a “small number” of units are affected and tells owners with a damaged screen to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

The early reports are not subtle. Some iPhone Duo buyers say their screens cracked within hours of unboxing, and one owner described a crack after fewer than 20 unfolds. Apple has reportedly handed out immediate replacements to affected customers, but it has not explained what is going wrong, and it has not said whether it plans to change anything on the manufacturing side.

Tests Point at the Hinge, Apple Stays Quiet

Independent testing has added to the concern without settling the cause:

  • JerryRigEverything’s bend test reportedly left the inner display with permanent green lines
  • iFixit identified a possible stress point inside the hinge itself
  • Neither group has confirmed what is actually causing the cracks in customer units

The timing is awkward for Apple. CEO John Ternus recently described early Android foldables as “kind of cheap and crappy” in an interview with TIME, and Samsung has already used the moment to mock the iPhone Duo.

Hashlytics Take

“Small number” is carrying a lot of weight in Apple’s statement, because it comes with no figure, no cause, and no promise of a fix. Replacing units on request is the easy part. The harder question is whether the failures trace back to the hinge design or to a manufacturing flaw, since only the second can be corrected without redesigning the phone. Until Apple says which it is, the first few weeks of ownership are a gamble for anyone who paid $1,999, and Samsung’s early Galaxy Fold troubles are a reminder that foldables rarely get past this stage without the maker admitting more than it has so far.
