BT International and STACKIT Forge EU Sovereign Cloud Partnership
The new alliance is designed to help organizations operating within the EU navigate complex data regulations and achieve optimal application performance. Initially, BT International will integrate its existing global network to provide internet connectivity, specifically peering, directly into STACKIT’s EU-based sovereign cloud infrastructure. This foundational step lays the groundwork for more comprehensive connectivity solutions.
Expanding Secure Multi-Cloud Connectivity
Future phases of the partnership will introduce private connectivity options, which will eventually be delivered through BT’s innovative Global Fabric network-as-a-service (NaaS) platform. This platform promises on-demand, flexible, and resilient connectivity to STACKIT and other cloud services. A key development from this partnership is the unprecedented ability for organizations outside the EU to access STACKIT’s private sovereign cloud via a secure, private sovereign connection, moving beyond reliance on public internet links. This offers greater control over data and application hosting for EU-based multinationals with global reach, ensuring compliance while driving business value. BT’s Global Fabric connectivity will provide on-demand access to a full suite of secure, stable, scalable, and sovereign multi-cloud networking services, including pre-integrated access to major cloud platforms and SaaS providers.
Addressing Data Sovereignty and Geopolitical Risks
The partnership directly responds to growing concerns over data sovereignty and geopolitical instability. STACKIT’s high-performance data centers, located exclusively in Europe, operate under stringent security protocols and are fully GDPR-compliant, ensuring customers retain complete control over their data within EU borders. The cloud provider also offers robust recovery capabilities, protecting against outages. According to the latest McKinsey Economic Conditions Outlook, geopolitical instability is the most significant perceived economic risk, cited by 72 percent of executives in February 2026, a sharp increase from 51 percent in December 2025.
Executive Perspectives on Digital Sovereignty
Ghoutam Banerjee, director partner ecosystem & growth at STACKIT, highlighted the partnership’s significance. Through our partnership with BT, we are creating a groundbreaking connection for digital sovereignty,
Banerjee stated. Together, we are enabling multinational corporations to access our sovereign STACKIT Cloud directly from locations outside the EU via a private sovereign connection.
Joris van Oers, chief commercial officer at BT International, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of data, operational, and technical sovereignty for customers. CIOs want resilient networks and IT systems to keep their businesses running, regardless of trade policy changes, global outages or natural disasters,
van Oers noted.
The Path Ahead for Compliant Cloud Access
This collaboration between BT International and STACKIT provides a critical solution for multinational enterprises seeking to build resilient, sovereign IT infrastructures for their European operations. By leveraging Global Fabric, customers can ensure their data remains within EU borders, even as it moves between clouds and users. This initiative underscores the increasing demand for secure, compliant, and sovereign cloud services in an evolving global regulatory landscape.
