Dots,a new generation of always-on, autonomous AI agents powered by the company’s GPT-6 Astra model. Dots are designed to handle diverse tasks across applications, automating workflows without needing constant prompting from the user.
The announcement follows the hiring of OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger, who now leads OpenAI’s agentic AI development. Dots can connect with platforms like ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams, managing work assignments autonomously according to an OpenAI blog post. The agents integrate with over 4,000 applications and are built to learn user preferences over time.
Who Gets Access First
Dots are not available to everyone at launch. Access requires a specific OpenAI subscription tier, rolling out initially to:
- Pro plans
- Business Premium plans
- Enterprise plans
These tiers are available in eligible markets, with broader expansion planned. You’ll need one of these subscriptions before you can create your first Dot.
Creating Your First Dot
Setting up a Dot takes just a few steps, whether you’re using the desktop app or a browser.
- Open ChatGPT. Launch the desktop application or head to the web interface in your browser.
- Create your Dot. Follow the prompts to set up your initial agent, included with eligible Pro or Business Premium plans.
- Name your Dot. Give it an identity that helps personalize its function.
- Connect your apps. Link your Dot to the tools you actually use, from the pool of 4,000+ supported apps.
- Start messaging. Once set up, message your Dot directly through the ChatGPT mobile app to assign tasks.
Dots are built to improve with use. The more you work together, the more your dot learns your preferences, how you think and what good looks like to you,
OpenAI states.
Building Teams and Staying Safe
Once your primary Dot is running, OpenAI lets you expand into teams of dots
that collaborate on tasks together. The approach mirrors other agentic AI systems like OpenClaw or Meta’s Muse, but OpenAI has built in additional privacy safeguards for Dots.
Those safeguards include read-only permissions by default and a monitoring system that flags safety concerns and harmful behaviors. Users also control which apps each agent can access, giving more granular control over what data gets shared.
Dots are rolling out now to Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise plans in eligible markets.
