A New Flagship Chip Leads the Way
The Signature 27 pairs Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 with a 200 megapixel periscope camera and integrated Bang & Olufsen audio. Motorola confirmed these features for the US market at Qualcomm’s Tech Summit in September 2026, where the chip itself was unveiled alongside the phone.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is the world’s first mobile CPU to reach 5GHz, built on TSMC‘s 2nm process. Compared to its predecessor, Qualcomm claims:
- 13% faster CPU performance, with 37% better power efficiency
- 44% faster GPU performance (Adreno 850), with 40% better efficiency
- 35% faster NPU performance, capable of running 30 billion plus parameter AI models on device
- 33% better AI performance per watt
For context on raw power, Qualcomm says the new GPU is 21% faster than a desktop GTX 1650, a notable claim for a chip running inside a phone. Motorola is the first confirmed partner for the chip, with Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Honor, OnePlus, Redmi, RedMagic, iQoo, Nubia, and ZTE also lined up to use it. Motorola claims the Signature 27 is its fastest Android phone yet, though independent benchmarks are not yet available.
The Camera and Cooling Setup
The 200MP periscope telephoto camera headlines the device, offering up to 100x Super Zoom Pro. It sits alongside a 50MP Sony LYTIA L910 main sensor with generative AI assisted capabilities. Motorola’s product imagery shows four rear camera openings, but only two sensors are detailed in current US materials, leaving the roles of the remaining two cameras unconfirmed. Megapixel count alone does not guarantee real zoom quality, so how this system performs in practice remains to be seen.
To keep the new chip running under load, Motorola built an ArcticMesh cooling system combining thermal gel, liquid metal, copper mesh, and a 3D vapor chamber. The company claims this chamber is 40% larger than the one in the previous Signature model, aimed at sustaining performance during gaming and video recording. As with the camera claims, independent testing will be needed to confirm how well this holds up.
What’s Still Missing
Motorola’s current US announcements leave several key details unconfirmed:
- Battery capacity and charging speed
- Full display specifications
- Complete camera array details
- Dimensions, weight, and water resistance rating
- US pricing
The previous Motorola Signature launched in Europe at €999, though that offers no direct read on what the Signature 27 will cost in the US. Motorola’s US product page also mentions a seven year software and security update commitment, though the exact terms, including whether that covers major Android version upgrades, are not yet fully confirmed. If it holds up, that commitment alone could meaningfully extend the phone’s value against Samsung’s own update policies. Two finishes have been announced so far: Coal Smoke and Capulet Olive.
How This Stacks Up Against Samsung
The Signature 27’s confirmed specifications position it as a serious contender against Samsung’s Galaxy Ultra line, at least on paper. A meaningful comparison will depend on camera consistency, display quality, battery endurance, and whether Motorola actually delivers on its software update promises over time.
