PlayStation disc backlash impacts Mortal Shell 2, Doom
Sony is facing significant community backlash following its announcement to discontinue physical disc support for the upcoming PlayStation 6 generation, beginning in 2028. The controversy has sparked widespread criticism across social media and is now bleeding into the promotion of other games tied to the PlayStation ecosystem.

The Backlash Begins

Sony confirmed its plans to abandon physical media, triggering immediate and widespread negative reactions from the community. Players expressed strong dissatisfaction with the shift toward an all-digital future, and that anger hasn’t subsided.

Every PlayStation Post Gets Flooded

PlayStation’s official X account broke its silence after days of quiet activity with a post promoting an upcoming arcade fight stick for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The response was swift and overwhelming. The post garnered over 27 million views with more than 65,000 comments, most of them critical of the company’s disc policy.

That single post opened the floodgates. Now virtually every game announcement PlayStation shares receives similar treatment.

Game/Update Views Negative Comments
The Blood of Dawnwalker preview 2.5 million 16,000
Mortal Shell 2 release announcement (Aug 20) Not disclosed 9,500
Apex Legends x Cyberpunk event (Jul 14) Not disclosed 8,500
The Elder Scrolls Online Season One update Not disclosed 4,400

Third Party Games Caught in the Crossfire

The backlash hasn’t stopped at PlayStation’s own announcements. Third-party studios are getting caught in the chaos. On July 7, the official Doom account announced its new Dark Ages DLC. When PlayStation reposted it, the comments section erupted with frustration.

One user responded directly: Retweeting Doom will NOT save you Sony, and we are NOT playing Doom or any other game on PlayStation anymore. Another sarcastically noted: OH? So you can physically retweet but you can’t release physical games?

The irony isn’t lost on players. Games like Doom, which had physical editions for years, are now being used as collateral damage in the larger argument about Sony’s all-digital future.

Where This Goes From Here

The online protests show no signs of slowing down. A petition urging Sony to reconsider has already gathered over 227,000 signatures. Research director Daniel Ahmad at Niko Partners expects Sony to respond to the pressure at some point.

But Ahmad also noted that a full reversal at this stage would be surprising. That means players may need to get comfortable with the idea that physical PlayStation games are heading toward extinction in 2028, regardless of how much noise the community makes.
