Prophetic AI has unveiled wearable devices designed to induce lucid dreams, marking a bold claim in the emerging intersection of neurotechnology and sleep science. The startup launched two headband-style devices, Dual and Phase, which the company says can help users become aware during dreams and control their content through targeted brain stimulation.

How Prophetic AI’s Dream Control Devices Work

The devices operate using transcranial focused ultrasound, or tFUS, paired with artificial intelligence to target specific brain regions during sleep. According to Prophetic AI’s explanation on X, the wearables send safe ultrasonic energy through the forehead into the prefrontal cortex, activating the frontoparietal network. This network typically remains inactive during dreaming, contributing to the lack of lucidity most people experience.

By stimulating this network, Prophetic claims the devices rebalance neural activity and gently push dreams into a more lucid state. The devices also integrate electroencephalogram, or EEG, sensors to monitor brain activity in real time. This approach mirrors technology explored elsewhere in neurotechnology, such as brain-reading caps developed by other Silicon Valley startups.

The Two Models and Pricing Structure

Prophetic AI offers two products at different price points. The Prophetic Dual, the entry-level option, retails for $449 (approximately Rs 43,200) and will begin shipping at the end of 2024. The premium Prophetic Phase costs $1,299 (roughly Rs 1,22,000) with a mid-2027 shipping window.

Both devices share an identical headband design featuring an attached wire. The company positions the Dual as the accessible option for consumers curious about lucid dreaming, while the Phase likely offers enhanced features or performance.

Unproven Technology and Scientific Questions

While the underlying theory of using tFUS to trigger lucid dreams is intriguing, the company has not yet published peer-reviewed evidence demonstrating that these devices achieve their claimed results. Prophetic’s pitch rests on the hypothesis that stimulating the frontoparietal network during REM sleep could improve dream recall, vividness, and user control.
