Rockstar’s next installment arrives on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The base game runs $79.99, with an Ultimate Edition priced at $99.99, and pre-orders are already open on both platforms. Anticipation has only grown since players got a 30 minute extended look at the game on Netflix.
Why New Zealand Gets the Game First
Rockstar is using a staggered release, launching at midnight local time in each region rather than a single global drop. That detail matters more than it sounds. New Zealand’s clocks hit midnight well ahead of most of the world, so players there get access first, at 12:00 a.m. NZDT on November 19, which works out to 11:00 a.m. UTC.
The gap is significant. New Zealand’s launch lands roughly 19 hours ahead of regions like Mexico and Central America. For Xbox owners, that time difference is the entire trick.
The New Zealand Trick, Step by Step
Xbox lets players change their console’s region in settings, and doing so effectively fast forwards the clock to New Zealand’s midnight. Here’s how to set it up:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller
- Select Profile & system
- Select System
- Select Language & location
- Set Location to New Zealand
- Select Restart Now
Once the console restarts under the new region, the game becomes playable as soon as New Zealand’s local launch window opens, well before your own region’s midnight arrives.
Why PlayStation Owners Can’t Do the Same
PlayStation 5 owners face a tougher path. Sony doesn’t allow a simple region swap the way Xbox does. The only real workaround involves creating a brand new New Zealand PSN account and buying the game with New Zealand dollar PSN gift cards, which is a dead end for anyone who already pre-ordered on their main account.
What to Watch Before You Switch
Microsoft only allows a region change once every three months, so this isn’t something to undo casually. Switching to New Zealand now means you’re stuck there until your home region’s launch window passes anyway, at minimum.
A couple of other things worth knowing before flipping the switch:
- If the console blocks the region change outright, it may flag the account for suspension
- New Zealand’s legal adult age differs from some other countries, and its local terms could technically treat an adult user elsewhere as a minor there
- New Zealand starts daylight saving time on September 27, 2026 at 2:00 a.m., running through April 4, 2027 at 3:00 a.m., which shifts the exact conversion
Given that last point, it’s worth running the numbers through a time zone converter before launch night rather than trusting mental math, since a miscalculation could mean waiting around for nothing.
