North Korea’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement dismissing Washington’s narrative of a “non-existent cyber threat.” The ministry accused the US of collaborating with media and institutions to foster a false perception of North Korea’s role in hacking activities. This response highlights escalating diplomatic tensions over cyber issues.
North Korea Rejects $6 Billion Crypto Theft Claims
US authorities have consistently tied North Korea to large-scale cyber operations, including campaigns of cryptocurrency theft. Reports suggest Pyongyang-linked cyberattacks have stolen over $6 billion in cryptocurrency since 2017, according to TRM Labs. These funds are believed to be a crucial revenue stream for the country’s nuclear and missile development programs.
US Sanctions and Allegations Against North Korea’s Cyber Program
The US Justice Department recently underscored its enforcement efforts, sentencing two Americans for facilitating remote IT jobs for North Koreans across numerous companies, including Fortune 500 firms since 2017. Authorities stated this scheme allowed North Korean workers access to corporate systems, generating millions in illicit revenue. Sanctions have also been levied against individuals and entities connected to these operations, which US agencies claim pose a continuous threat to global businesses.
Recent DeFi Exploits Fuel Renewed Scrutiny
Tensions have intensified following reports linking North Korean groups to several recent cryptocurrency exploits. The April attack on DeFi platform KelpDAO, which involved over $290 million, is currently under investigation as potentially the year’s largest crypto theft. Early suspicions in this incident, and a separate $289.7 million theft from Drift Protocol, point to groups like the Lazarus Group and its subgroup TraderTraitor, both widely associated with North Korean cyber activity.
Global Cybersecurity Firms Track North Korean Cyber Warfare Capabilities
Washington claims North Korea has developed a robust cyber-warfare program, dating back to the mid-1990s, which serves as a vital source of foreign currency. Cybersecurity firms describe this program as one of the most active globally. Google analysts have also recently flagged suspected North Korean involvement in attacks on widely used software packages.
North Korea Vows Retaliation Against “Absurd Slander”
Despite international scrutiny, North Korea maintains that the US is distorting facts to justify its hostile policies. The Foreign Ministry warned it would not tolerate what it termed escalating confrontation in cyberspace. Pyongyang stated it would take “all necessary measures” to defend its national interests in response to these accusations.
