Apple Unveils Hidden CarPlay Updates in iOS 27
Apple has quietly rolled out a series of significant updates to CarPlay within iOS 27, largely bypassing its main WWDC 2026 keynote. While the spotlight shone on Siri AI and broader Apple Intelligence additions, the Cupertino giant embedded these new CarPlay functionalities in a developer-focused video. These enhancements are poised to arrive with the stable iOS 27 release this fall.

CarPlay Gains Video Playback, Enhanced Navigation, and MiniPlayer

The most notable addition to CarPlay in iOS 27 is the introduction of video playback support for apps. Developers can now create video streaming applications for car dashboards, allowing users to watch content directly from supported platforms like YouTube and Netflix.

A key caveat is that video playback is strictly limited to when the car is parked, and vehicle manufacturers must specifically enable this feature. Additionally, the “Now Playing” screen finally receives an audio scrubber, allowing users to precisely jump to any point in a song or podcast. A persistent audio MiniPlayer will also appear in the top-right corner of the CarPlay dashboard, providing quick access to basic playback controls and album art without leaving navigation.

Under-the-Hood Improvements and Developer Tools

Beyond user-facing features, Apple has implemented crucial backend improvements. iOS 27 refines GPS accuracy and heading detection, aiming to resolve common navigation glitches such as erratic car icon movement at stoplights or incorrect rerouting.

Wireless CarPlay connections are also promised to be more reliable, addressing issues like mid-drive disconnections, unclear voice calls, and audio quality dips. For developers, iOS 27 introduces new app templates across various categories, support for Live Activities, and widgets from any app.

New APIs for building conversational voice applications, including AI chatbot integrations, further expand possibilities within the CarPlay ecosystem.

Siri AI Integration and Visual Refinements

CarPlay is also set to receive the advanced Siri AI capabilities introduced with iOS 27. This Gemini-powered assistant enables more natural, follow-up questions without needing to repeat the initial request.

All Siri AI conversations initiated via CarPlay will be stored in the iPhone’s Siri app, marked with a car icon for easy reference. However, utilizing Siri AI for CarPlay will require an iPhone 15 Pro or a newer model. Visually, CarPlay gets a subtle refresh with 14 new wallpapers in the Celosia style, consistent with iOS 27 and macOS 27. Liquid Glass elements will now reflect chosen transparency levels, and app icons will feature additional refractive layers for enhanced depth.
