The Investigation
NDPC National Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji confirmed the ongoing investigation at a media roundtable in Abuja on Friday, marking a significant announcement during the commission’s third-anniversary celebrations. The investigation specifically targets INEC and Olayinka, a media aide to the FCT Minister, who is accused of publicly releasing Ike’s personal data without authorization.
The NDPC is treating the matter with utmost urgency. According to Dr. Olatunji, the alleged breach directly threatens the credibility of Nigeria’s national database at a time when electoral integrity is paramount. The commission has pledged to conduct a thorough, impartial investigation without prejudging the outcome.
In his statement, Dr. Olatunji emphasized the commission’s commitment to fairness, saying: No matter who you are, we invite you. No matter how big you are, we invite you, and we take the necessary actions.
He stressed that the investigation will be diligent and meticulous, ensuring no one is pronounced guilty until proven so.
A Growing Pattern of Enforcement
Over four years of operation, the NDPC has built a track record of wide-ranging enforcement action. The commission has investigated global technology platforms including Meta and TikTok, as well as local firms such as Temu, Remita, and Sterling Bank. These regulatory actions have generated over N8 billion for the federal government while contributing to a data ecosystem now valued at $12 billion.
The INEC investigation represents another major enforcement initiative, signaling that the commission views electoral data integrity as non-negotiable, regardless of institutional status or political considerations.
Building a Trustworthy Data Ecosystem
Beyond enforcement actions, the NDPC is working to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure through education and partnerships. The commission is collaborating with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to integrate data protection principles into Nigeria’s educational curriculum and other key sectors.
This strategic initiative aims to cultivate a more trustworthy data ecosystem that can attract increased investment and bolster confidence in Nigeria’s growing digital economy. The effort reflects recognition that long-term confidence in Nigeria’s digital future depends on embedding data protection values across society, not just in enforcement actions.
Timing and Implications
The announcement comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria. With elections on the horizon, questions about the security and integrity of electoral data carry heightened significance. The NDPC‘s swift response to the alleged breach signals that data protection will remain a central focus for Nigeria’s regulatory environment going forward, affecting both government institutions and private sector actors.
